New to Youth Tournaments - What to Know

A current 2025–2026 USA Fencing membership is required to compete. The $34 Access Membership is sufficient.

Once membership is active, fencers register for events through AskFRED.net. Registration reserves a spot; no payment is collected online.

Entry fees are paid at the venue on the day of competition (cash or check only).

When to Arrive

Fencers should arrive at least one hour before the close of check-in for their first event.

Upon arrival:

  • Check in and pay the entry fee

  • Proceed to weapons check (a coach or teammate will assist if needed)

Equipment Information

Competition equipment will be issued during practice the week prior to the event. Fencers are expected to practice putting on all equipment independently, with minimal assistance.

All assigned equipment must be brought to the event. Spare equipment at the venue is limited, so please double-check equipment bags before leaving home.

Please ensure your fencer brings:

  • Long socks (knee-high)

  • A T-shirt or underlayer, plus a fresh shirt to change into

  • Athletic shoes

  • All assigned fencing equipment

If your fencer owns personal equipment, please make sure it is clearly and visibly labeled with their name. Labeling should be easy to see at a glance (for example, a bold name written on the inside or along an edge). At fencing tournaments, much of the equipment looks identical, and clear labels make it far easier to identify and return misplaced items.

If required equipment is missing and no backup is available, the fencer will not be able to compete.

If equipment is damaged or missing, families may be responsible for replacement costs. Coaches will help assess and resolve issues as they arise.Weapons

Weapons will be provided at the event.

Weapons used at the event belong to the venue or club and must remain on site. Please do not take home any weapons that are not your own.

Weapons check includes:

  • Body cords

  • Mask

  • Glove

Armoring & First Aid

Coaches will have basic armoring supplies available for minor repairs.
A limited supply of basic first-aid items (tape, bandages) will be available.

What to Wear / Changing

Changing facilities at the venue are limited.

Fencers should arrive wearing fencing knickers and socks, with other clothing worn over them as needed. Knickers must be worn properly during fencing and not over sweatpants.

Arriving partially dressed helps reduce congestion and keeps the event running on schedule.

Fencers Entered in Two Events

Events are scheduled to avoid overlap. Fencers entered in two events are expected to remain at the venue for both.

Do not leave the venue between events. If food or supplies are needed, a parent or adult should bring them.

If a fencer must leave for any reason, a coach must be informed in advance.

Competition Expectations

Tournament days can be long and unpredictable, especially for newer fencers. Scheduling delays, equipment issues, and performance variability are a normal part of competition.

At NCF Boulder, competition is treated as an extension of training. Success is measured not only by results, but by preparation, decision-making, focus, and composure under pressure.

Parents’ support in helping fencers stay organized, rested, and calm plays an important role.

Day-Of Communication

If issues arise on the morning of the event (equipment problems, delays, or questions), please stay in contact.
