On Deck

Required preparation time before youth classes

What Is On Deck?

On Deck is a required readiness period that takes place immediately before the scheduled start of youth classes at NCF Boulder.

For example, a 4:30 PM class has On Deck from 4:15-4:30 PM.

On Deck is:

  • part of the structured training window

  • required for participation

  • preparation time, not instruction

Instruction begins exactly at the posted class start time.

Why We Use On Deck

On Deck exists to support safety, discipline, and high-quality instruction.

It allows us to:

  • start class on time, every day

  • avoid disrupted or repeated instruction

  • accommodate real after-school arrival patterns

  • protect student safety and readiness

Without a preparation window, start times drift and instruction quality drops.
On Deck prevents that.

What Happens During On Deck

During On Deck, students are expected to prepare themselves for class, including:

  • checking in

  • changing clothes and gearing up

  • getting water

  • organizing or adjusting equipment

  • minor equipment repairs

  • settling socially and mentally

When space allows, students may do light warm-up on the fencing floor. This supports readiness but does not replace or extend instructional time.

What On Deck Is Not

To be clear, On Deck is not:

  • optional

  • free time

  • instruction

  • an extension of class

  • a casual arrival window

Arrival Expectations

Students should arrive early enough to use On Deck appropriately.

Being in the building does not mean class has started.

Instruction begins exactly at the scheduled time.
Students who are not ready when class starts may miss part of instruction.

In Short

On Deck ensures that:

  • preparation happens before instruction

  • classes start on time

  • coaches can teach without interruption

  • students train safely and effectively

When everyone understands On Deck, practices run more smoothly for students, families, and coaches alike.
